Introduction

Meldreth Local History Group received Heritage Lottery funding to finance the digging of 20-30 test pits in different locations in the village. Each test pit was one metre square and up to one metre deep.

Our project was officially launched by Dr Carenza Lewis, a former Time Team presenter and head of the University of Cambridge’s Cambridge Community Heritage unit.

When did the digs take place?

The test pits were dug over three different weekends during the summer of 2013.  A map showing the location of all of the pits is available.  For details of the pits that were dug each weekend, please click on the relevant date below:

After each dig, finds were taken to a central location for a preliminary assessment and were then sent to Cambridge University for expert analysis.

Exhibition

Our exhibition was held on Sunday 24th November 2013 in Meldreth Village Hall.  The exhibition was open from 11.00am to 5.00pm and Dr Carenza Lewis gave a talk at 3.00pm.  Throughout the day there was an opportunity to view the finds, to learn of their significance and to watch two films of the project.

Refreshments were served throughout the day and MLHG merchandise was on sale.

For further information on the project, please see our page on the background of the project or read our blog.
