The School Timetable

In addition to writing, reading and arithmetic, the children had classes in a variety of practical subjects.  These included:

  • Gardening (the school had its own vegetable garden)
  • Woodwork
  • Needlework
  • Drawing
  • Housewifery
  • Cookery

On the frequent occasions when poor weather prevented the children from gardening, they were given lessons in spelling, dictation and general knowledge instead.

In October 1910, it was recorded in the school log book that, “physical exercises will be taken every morning from 9.35 to 9.45 am in the place of singing or drill”.
