Thomas Worland (1670 - 1714)

Thomas was born in Little Staughton, Bedfordshire in 1670.  He married Elizabeth Gore in 1687 and they had the following children: Mary, Elizabeth, Thomas, Benjamin and Joseph.  We do not know when the family arrived in Meldreth, but Joseph was born in the village in 1703.

Thomas died in 1714 and was buried at Holy Trinity Church, Meldreth on 17th March 1714.  Elizabeth died on 2nd November 1728 and was buried at Holy Trinity Church three days later.

A rare insight into Thomas’ life is given by an inventory of his goods made after his death in 1714.  Click on the image below to display a larger version.

In his will, Thomas not only bequeathed “all that my orchard in Chiswick End in Meldreth … and half a rood or arable land” but also he left to his eldest son, “one shilling of lawfull money of Great Britain to buy him a pair of Gloves”.
