Internet access for all

By Graham Borgonon

Meldreth's Community Access Point (CAP) is located at the Sheltered Housing Centre in Elin Way.  Two computers are available and tuition is provided free of charge.  To make a booking, please contact Ron on (01763) 262199.

Community Access Points were a government funded South Cambridgeshire District Council initiative using volunteers to set up free computer access in rural villages which did not have a public library or a village college.

Meldreth qualified for  the scheme and with the support of the Parish Council a small group of IT enthusiasts volunteered as tutors.  To date nearly 100 local people have benefited from their freely given expertise.

Since the scheme started in 2005 many more people have become au fait with computers either through work or family and friends and the volunteers find themselves teaching fewer complete beginners but are receiving more requests from people wanting to learn about a specific aspect of computing, e.g. digital photography or using spreadsheets.

Additionally, the CAP has provided a focus for history enthusiasts who set up Meldreth Local History Group.  The Group uses the facility on a weekly basis to research local and family history.

From time to time the Community Access Point volunteers produce articles or hold 'open evenings'.  For instance, several successful family history open evenings have been held, in order to take advantage of the free access to  Mainly though, people make contact for help with various computer related issues and are assigned a tutor to assist them, usually on a one to one basis.

Tutors and members, once linked, arrange their own session appointments which take place at the CAP facility in the Sheltered Housing Centre in Elin Way, Meldreth.
