The Footpaths Volunteers

Volunteers laying wood chippings on one of Meldreth's footpaths

The objective of The Parish Paths Partnership (PPP), as we are officially known, is to keep the footpaths (not pavements) in Meldreth in a good condition for villagers to be able to use them. The group was formed in 2003 as part of the compilation of the Village Plan.

There are 14 footpaths in the village of Meldreth and each January we compile a survey of the condition of the footpaths and decide on an action plan to continue maintenance of the paths.

The types of work we undertake includes:

  • Spreading wood chippings by the River Mel so that the path is not too muddy
  • Clearing overhanging branches and brambles to keep paths clear
  • Stabilising footpath edges if they subside
  • Maintaining footpath finger signs and way markers
  • Minor repairs to stiles and bridges
  • Requests to land owners to carry out required maintenance
  • Assisting the Parish Council with annual leaf clearance in the stocks area.

The group is fairly informal, but operates under the guidance of the Parish Council and in partnership with the Cambridgeshire County Council (CCC) which has overall responsibility for footpaths. In previous years CCC has awarded us a small budget.

We have planning meetings about five times per year on a Monday at 7.30pm in the Village Hall on dates to suit most members.

We undertake group working parties about six times per year to complete our action plan, again on dates to suit most members. Individual members may also complete small tasks at other times.

If you would like to help us or require further information please contact the Parish Clerk on (01763) 269928 or by email.
