Frank Rodgers Remanded at the Cambridge Police Court

The following report appeared in the Herts and Cambs Reporter and Royston Crow:

The Accused Remanded at the Cambridge Police Court

Purely formal were the proceedings which resulted in the further remand of Frank Rodgers, at an Occasional Court in the County Police Office before Dr. Donald MacAllister on Thursday (yesterday morning).

The prisoner who was attired in the clothes he wore at the inquest, stood with drooping head and his hands in his overcoat pockets and replied “No” to a question by the magistrate as to whether he had something to say why the case should not be remanded.

Supt. Webb was sworn and took the oath, repeating the formula usual in such cases.  He “verily” believed that he would be able to prove the case if the prisoner was remanded to Melbourn Petty Sessions on Monday, April 25th.  Dr. MacAllister, having granted the remand applied for, Supt. Webb informed the prisoner, who merely observed “Thank you,” and left the office in custody of the police.  He maintained a cool and quiet demeanour throughout the proceedings.  His older brother was present in Court.  Of course, Frank is at present incarcerated in the Cambridge Gaol, the necessary remand was granted at the Police Office as a matter of convenience.

The boy’s comfort has been considered as much as the regulations will permit, and in a letter to his father he speaks of the kindness he is receiving at the hands of the officials.  Provision for his meals being sent in from the outside have been made, and during his enforced stay in the gaol young Frank spends most of his time reading books supplied by his friends.
