An Entertainment in the Parish Room

The Parish Room, which stood in North End

The following report appeared in the Royston Crow on 6th June 1890:

An entertainment was given in the Parish Room on Tuesday last, June 3rd.  It is so delightful to be out of doors on fine evenings at this time of the year, that it is not surprising that the room was not entirely filled, but those who did come (and there was a very fair attendance) and who enjoy good music, must have spent a very enjoyable evening.  The names of Mrs Dalton Nash, Miss Clara Mortlock and Mr Gibbs are sufficient warrant for this statement, and the sweet voice of Miss Whittington bids fair to make her one of the favourite songstresses of the neighbourhood.  Mr Gibbs was in splendid form and we don’t know which to admire most, the excellent taste he displays in the choice of his songs, or the capital way in which he sings them when chosen.  The comic element was supplied by Mr P Wedd, whose appearance on the platform always calls forth a very hearty reception, and Professor Mitchell, who performed some neat feats of legerdemain and earned well deserved applause for his clever illustration of the art of ventriloquism in the amusing sketch, “Over the garden wall”.  The stage was very tastefully decorated; those who assisted in this work deserve the warmest thanks of the promoters of the concert.

The following was the programme:
Part One
