On Wednesday, August 1st 2001, 150 years after the first train ran through Meldreth (and Melbourn) Station, a family fun day was held to celebrate this momentous occasion.   The event was organised by a committee of Meldreth residents (see below) with assistance from WAGN (West Anglia Great Northern Railway Ltd) and Railtrack Ltd.  Local companies Eternit, TTP Group, TTP COM Ltd., Cambridge Building Society and Cambridge Antibody Trust gave donations totalling £900 to help make the day a great success.  The event was held in the car-park at Meldreth station on a beautiful sunny day.  The WI provided teas and refreshments and the Royston and District Model Engineering Society ran steam train rides.  Other stalls and games ensured there was something for everyone.

A very detailed and informative 8 page commemorative souvenir brochure edited by John Evans was produced to mark the occasion with photographs, articles and history of the railway’s 150 years.  The brochure can be seen by scrolling down to the bottom of this page and clicking on the relevant link.

A feature on Meldreth and Melbourn Station in the 1920s was printed in the Winter 2002 edition of the Melbourn magazine and is also reproduced below.  The feature was centred around the 1920s photograph of station staff shown above.

The committee organising the event were: John Evans, Joan Fallon, John Hanson, Sherida and Ted Inman, David Piggott and Terry Rolt.

If you have any more photos from this day we would love to hear from you.
