Church Bell Ringing to Mark the Opening of the 2012 Olympic Games

Were you part of it?  How many of the residents of Melbourn and Meldreth stood on their doorsteps at twelve minutes past eight on Friday 27th July, the opening day of the Olympics, and rang a bell, their own doorbell, or even their neighbour’s doorbell?  Did you hear the bells of All Saints’ Melbourn and Holy Trinity Meldreth ringing for three minutes?

Three of the Melbourn and Meldreth ringers mounted the tower at All Saints’ bearing a portable radio.  This was tuned into Radio Four’s Today programme and at the first stroke of Big Ben at 8.12 am they chimed three bells for three minutes.  At the same time three more ringers (including our youngest ringer, 10 year old John Hinton) went to Holy Trinity and rang the bells there.

If you listened but you were not fortunate enough to hear the church bells it may have been the wind direction or that we were able to ring only three bells in each tower.

Thank you ever so much for recording this. It’s wonderful to be able to hear the church bells ring where my 5th Great Grandfather attended over 200 yrs ago. William Holder 1755-1813.

    Again thank you so much.
