A False Alarm
The following report of an air raid siren appears in the school log book for 6 June 1940:
Air raid precautions. A siren was heard at 11.7am and children were dispersed to houses in the immediate neighbourhood of the school, according to plans previously made. Later it was discovered there had been no air-raid warning.
The War Effort
Throughout the war, the school contributed to the war effort by raising money, as seen in these extracts from the log books:
June 1941
During the South Cambs War Weapons Week (May 25th-31st) the Meldreth School Group raised £67 6/6.
December 1941
During the year Jan. – Dec. 1941 the school effort to the war has resulted in the sale of N. S. Stamps and Certificates to the value of £250 13/-.
March 1942
The school closed for the Easter Holidays today Friday 27.3.42. The amount contributed to Warships Wk (ending 28.3.42) from the school was £82 11/6.
January 1944
Total money raised for war effort by sale of N.S. Stamps and certificates amounted to £254 2/- period Jan 1st to Dec 31st 1943.
