My grandfather, Edwin Ellis, was born in Meldreth on 24th January 1859. He was one of seven children born to Charles Ellis, a farmer, and his wife, Maria Louisa Oslar. The family lived at Oak Villa in the High Street. Edwin’s brother, Hubert Oslar Shepherd Ellis, who was three years his senior, was to become a prominent figure in Meldreth.

Edwin was living in Meldreth at the time of the census on 3rd April 1881, but soon afterwards emigrated to the United States. On 15th August 1888 he married Mary Arbogast in Chicago, Illinois with whom he had two children. Mary died in 1912 and Edwin remarried two years later. His second wife, Elizabeth Herbener, was my grandmother. They had one son, also Edwin Ellis, who was born in 1915.  Edwin junior went on to marry Gladyce Owens and they had three children, including me. Edwin senior died in 1930 in Michigan and my father, died in 2007. It is from amongst his possessions that I am finding many of my pictures and letters from England.

I have uploaded a copy of the Ellis family tree to Ancestry.com and would love to hear from anyone else who is researching this family.
