Memories of Atlas Sports Football Club
As a 17 year old I played for the Atlas Football Club in the Parthenon League in the 1953/54 season. The club had decided to enter the Parthenon League with the aim of becoming the top club in the area. The Atlas ground was very special and all local cup finals were played there. It had a super pitch which was roped off and had a grandstand, changing rooms and showers. The goals had a boarding at the back of the net which gave a satisfying sound ...
The Parish Room
The Parish Room was located in North End, not far from Holy Trinity Church. It was built by village subscription on land provided at a nominal rent by Christ’s College. Construction began in December 1885 when John George Mortlock laid the foundation stone and it was completed the following year. The tiles were especially made for it by John George Mortlock. The architect was Mr E J Cory and the builder was Mr G F Mills of Cambridge. Many social ...
A Concert in the Parish Room
The following report appeared in the Royston Crow on 20th January 1891: On Tuesday evening January 20th, another very successful concert was given in the Parish Room by the original “Black Boys” for the benefit of local charities. there was a good audience, and judging from the roars of laughter and applause, they appreciated the minstrels’ efforts to entertain. The songs and choruses were very good and well sung. Encores were not allowed, owing ...
Frollies
What an extraordinary wealth of talent we have in this village! John Elvin, jazz pianist, Sean (Sax on Legs), er, saxophonist, Rod and Caroline on guitar and flute respectively, our multi-talented station master in a tribute to Billy Bennett, Laura and Florence sang so well, Sarah Louise played guitar and sang (and she writes her own material), Andrew Betts got the very best out of the village hall piano with a beautiful Nocturne, Gillian Shephea...
An Entertainment in the Parish Room
The following report appeared in the Royston Crow on 6th June 1890: An entertainment was given in the Parish Room on Tuesday last, June 3rd. It is so delightful to be out of doors on fine evenings at this time of the year, that it is not surprising that the room was not entirely filled, but those who did come (and there was a very fair attendance) and who enjoy good music, must have spent a very enjoyable evening. The names of Mrs Dalton Nash, Mi...
Memories of Second World War Evacuees to Meldreth
Introduction During the Second World War a number of children were evacuated to Meldreth from the London area. Below are extracts from letters that have been received from two of the evacuees. The first was written over 25 years ago, the second in 2006. Also printed is an extract from a reply to the second by John Gipson. From Ian Lowe (written in 1984) I was evacuated from Raynes Park County Grammar School, near Wimbledon, with the school scout ...
Congregational Chapel
The Congregational Chapel stands in the garden of 63 High Street. It was built in 1852 and seated 100 people. It seems that the land at that time belonged to Richard Wallis. The Indenture of 5th day of November 1851 reads thus: This Indenture is made between Richard Wallis of the one part and Samuel Clear, William Clear, John Unwin, Benjamin Howard, Simeon Mortlock, William Blott, Jonathan Farnham, Ephraim Orriss, William Unwin, Daniel Flitton an...

My Memories of Meldreth School
In the 1940’s the school had two classes, the infant class with Miss Pearce (Granny Grunts) and the junior class with, in my time, Miss Broughton. In the infants class we had to sit up straight, blow our noses every morning and keep very quiet. Also we were given a spoon full of codliver oil and malt, all of us using the same spoon, one after the other. During the war we were all issued with gas masks which we were supposed to carry with us, but ...
Sarah Louise
In February 2011, Meldreth resident Sarah Louise performed at Frollies, a village talent show, where she sang a few songs, accompanied on her guitar. In May 2011, Sarah got through to the Midlands Area Final of Live and Unsigned, a national competition for original music artists which attracts around 10,000 entrants each year. The Area Final was one of six across the UK, and took place in Bedford on Saturday 7th May 2011, with Sarah appearing in ...
The Harrup Family
... Mike Allen Great website! Just wondering whether I'm related to the Harrups on this page? My great great grandad was William Harrup, born in Meldreth in 1842. His parents were William and Lydia Harrup, who had a son Chas born 1838. Is Chas the Charles featured on this page? I'd love to know....

The Summer of 1965
This memory was first published in Meldreth Matters in October 2008. Seeing an old picture of myself with “Bish” and John Isles at the Eternit Christmas party, I wondered if you may be interested in the following story. My eldest daughter is now eleven. What did she do over the summer holidays? Certainly she did not have the freedom I had at that age. A typical summer’s day back then would begin about seven with a quick breakfast. That complete, ...
Childhood Memories of Meldreth in the 1950s
When I moved to Meldreth in the 1950s it was rural and very much a farming community. We had few luxuries and had to provide our own amusement. Since the buses were infrequent, having a bicycle was a necessity, our mother gave up driving lessons when a car hurtled past her and landed upside down in a ditch! I cycled as far as my legs would take me, Orwell, Shepreth, even to Royston. We cycled to school together and back, and shopping trips were d...
Suicide of Thomas Worland
The following appeared in the Cambridge Chronicle on 23rd November 1872: Meldreth Suicide. On Wednesday C W Palmer Esq, deputy coroner, held an inquiry into the death of Thomas Worland, a dealer lodging at the Green Man. The deceased of late had been very much depressed about his soul which, he lamented, would be “lost for ever”. In this low state he had expressed thoughts of hanging himself, and on Tuesday he was found dead beneath an apple tree...
Bill Wing's Memories of the Railway Tavern
Click on the ‘play’ button on the adjacent audio bar to hear Bill and Joyce talk about their memories of the Railway Tavern. Our favourite pub was the Railway Tavern. We used to play darts in there. We used to have a candle on the side of the dart board. Ben used to come in there in the winter time, he used to have three lumps of coal on a little old shovel and he’d put one on the fire and take the other two back! This was the Tap Room and there ...
Holy Trinity, Meldreth: the Meldreth Psalm Book
In 1994, Linda Collins, a member of the Chiltern West Gallery Quire, came across an old, leather bound book of music at an antiques fair in Biggleswade. It was fortunate that it was she who found it as anyone else may well have passed it over. Linda recognised it as a book of church music, some printed and some in manuscript form, which originated from the early nineteenth century. However, more importantly for us, it had originated in our villag...
