Abbis Worland was the son of Thomas Worland and Mary Habbis. He was baptised in Holy Trinity Church, Meldreth on 21st October 1781. He was the first in the family to be given the name Abbis (which came from his mother’s maiden name and which has since been passed down through the generations).
Abbis married Elizabeth Cornish on 30 December 1806 in Holy Trinity Church. They had seven children who were all born in Meldreth: Mary (1807), William (1809), James (1811), Charles (1813), Elizabeth (1816), Thomas (1819) and Frederick (1823). Abbis was a cow leech (or animal doctor). Elizabeth died in 1823 at the age of 40, when her youngest child was just six months old.
On 24th July 1839 Abbis made a will (see extract below). He left everything to his four sons, Thomas, Frederick, William and Charles and to his daughter Mary Collins.
Abbis died on 18th September 1839. The following month, an inventory of his goods was taken [1] (total value £47 14s) and on 2nd June 1840 a sale of his goods, advertised beforehand by 200 posters, was held. It consisted of over 80 lots. Included in the sale were a large willow tree and four other willow trees (sold in three separate lots) at James Unwin’s Cottage, North End. The cottage was occupied by James, an agricultural labourer, and his family.
The sale realised £51 18s 6d. Several members of the Worland family were amongst the purchasers of Abbis’ goods.
