The Worland Family

Members of the Worland family first arrived in the village during the seventeenth century.

Early generations of the family were reputedly almost all very tall and well built, dark haired with distinguished features, striking countenance and straight noses.  They were kindly and gentle of nature and most had large families.  In addition to the branches of the family in Meldreth, there were many family members in nearby villages, particularly Melbourn, Bassingbourn and Foxton.

There are many different variations of the spelling of the surname such as Whorland, Whirland, Wallin, Wallen, Wallond and Warland.

In Meldreth, occupations held by members of the family included dealer, shopkeeper, cow leach, overseer, publican and veterinary surgeon.  The family also had links to several other well-known Meldreth families such as Adcock and Driver.

Much information about the family can be gleaned from wills, inventories and sales of goods.  Many of these are held by Cambridgeshire Archives.

At the bottom of the page, there is a link to a pdf file showing an extract from the Worland family tree.
