Sarah Butler

Lesley Farbridge

Sarah Butler (nee Pepper) was one of twelve children and grew up in the house (pictured in the advertisement on the right) in Whitecroft Road.   She lived there for most of her life until she moved with her husband to the almshouses in the High Street in 1956.  She was a well known figure in the village and was involved in various community organisations such as the Good Companions and Women’s Institute.  She was a ‘Friend’ of Meldreth Manor School and was village correspondent for the Royston Crow for many years.  She also wrote a book in two parts, “Meldreth Village” about her memories of growing up in Meldreth, the proceeds of which she donated to Meldreth Manor School. Both Part One and Part Two have now been published on this site.

Sarah was my grandmother and she is pictured with her children Wilfred and Sidney. Wilfred was my father and is on the left of the picture.

Below is a transcription of the advertisement:

Mrs S E Butler writes:-
“I feel I must write and tell you what great benefit my little boy derives from your Phosferine.  Although such a bonny child and a Prize Winner in a recent Baby Competition from among thousands of entries, he is very excitable, and being very forward his brain gets too active, consequently he talks and is very restless in his sleep.  Seeing Phosferine advertised for such things, we thought we would give it a trial, and I would never be without it now.  I always keep a large bottle handy, and at the least sign of restlessness, Wilfred has a dose, and it soon quietens his nerves, so that he sleeps naturally and peacefully.  I shall always recommend Phosferine for nervous children, as I have proved its worth for my own.”

(White Croft, Meldreth, Cambs. February 24th 1927.)

From the very first day you take PHOSFERINE you will gain new confidence, new life, new endurance.  It makes you eat better, and sleep better, and you will look as fit as you feel.  Phosferine is given with equally good results to the children.
